The modern world depends on various electronic devices for communication and critical infrastructure management. As a prepper, you should know that electromagnetic pulse (EMP) events threaten all electronics, from your mobile phone to the control room running America’s electrical grid.
As a prepper you can take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones from the consequences of an EMP event. Below are some EMP-proofing myths that could help you make informed decisions when preparing for an EMP event. (h/t to AskAPrepper.com)
Homemade Faraday cages can provide protection. But the effectiveness of a Faraday cage depends on proper design, adequate materials and professional notch construction techniques.
If you want to ensure that your devices are protected, it’s best to invest in a professionally designed and constructed Faraday cage. (Related: Surviving the aftermath: Scenarios in a post-EMP event.)
EMP bags or Faraday bags only offer low protection against EMPs. While EMP bags are ideal for storing small electronic devices, the material used for construction, proximity, source of electromagnetic radiation and the strength of the pulse may be too strong for the bag.
If you are worried that you are close to a potential site for a high-intensity EMP attack or have highly critical electronic components, choose adequately designed and grounded Faraday cages instead.
Turning off devices may help prevent the risk of electrical surges due to EMPs, but it does not guarantee safety.
The EMP will induce a voltage spike internally in the conductive materials, including all the wiring and circuit boards in your device.
While it is true that devices connected to the grid will have more severe voltage spikes, a small induced spike on a circuit board can also render a device useless. To prevent this, you can store important devices in a Faraday cage or an EMP-proof cloth.
Unplugging a device can help reduce the risk from EMPs, but the voltage spike induced in conductive materials can still happen within the devices.
While the risk may be low depending on where you live, EMPs can be potentially devastating. Remember that high-altitude nuclear detonations can cause severe EMPs.
These EMPs induce voltage spikes in conductive materials, which can damage your gadgets that are not designed for high-power input.
Before SHTF, invest in proper protection such as an EMP-proof cloth or a well-grounded and well-designed Faraday cage to protect devices against strong EMPs.
The Health Ranger Store is committed to helping you prepare for EMP events and other emergencies and we’re proud to introduce clean food supplies for your survival stockpile.
