The air you breathe may not look polluted now, but that’s not an excuse to leave out preparing for the time when it comes – which you could end up regretting big time if you’re not prepared. You might say that harmful toxins in the air are not much of a problem for you, but you could still fall victim to all sorts of contaminants that typically cause allergies and various breathing problems. That said, is there an easy and reliable way to fix this without breaking the bank? (h/t to Survivopedia.com)
Enter do-it-yourself (DIY) air purifiers. Not only do they serve the purpose of filtering and purifying the air around you, but they are also inexpensive and can be built without a lot of training or even preparation. Building your own DIY air purifier is rather straightforward, and you could benefit from using it right away.
There are a number of good reasons why you’d want to install a DIY air purifier wherever you might be staying. For one thing, it’s highly important to make sure that you can minimize the amount of harmful airborne toxins that you come into contact with in case a major crisis occurs. In instances of a major wildfire outbreak, for example, or during typical biological terror attacks, you want to have the ability to keep air quality under control.
As a general rule of thumb, you want to keep the following things in mind before you set out to build your own DIY air purifier. DIY air purifiers come in all shapes and sizes. For this article, it might be helpful to focus on one design in particular – air purifiers that are based on standard box fans.
Before beginning your build, you need to ask yourself one question, and you need to answer it as clearly as you can: do you really want to go the DIY route, or simply get a pre-built unit instead? Going with a pre-built will save you the hassle of spending your own time and effort on the build, but it can also be more expensive and at times not that suited to your particular needs. Compared with a DIY build, you’ll have less freedom if you choose a pre-built unit.
Once you’ve decided that you will indeed make your own air purifier – and make it based on box fans, at that – the next thing you need to choose is the filter you will use. Filters can be chosen based on their efficiency ratings, sizes, and construction materials. Ideally, you should choose materials that are capable of lasting a long time. You should also consider using filter media that has been impregnated with activated carbon as a precaution against poison gases, volatile organic compounds, and other fumes. You can also simply make your own air filter.
After you pick out your materials, you need to prepare the tools that you’re going to use. By all accounts, you only really need a saw of any kind, a drill/driver with screws, and a work table on which you can perform all of the building tasks. To really build one all the way through, it’s best to follow your preferred guides for DIY air filters and DIY air purifiers. Some other options for you might be building a DIY air purifier with a fan and a furnace filter, or making the absolute cheapest air purifier possible.
